JUST IN: ASUU begins two weeks warning strike at Kano govt owned varsity

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Yusuf Maitama Sule University branch has embarked on a two weeks warning strike over Kano State government in action to its demands.

According to the union, following series of engagements and submissions by the branch to the Kano State Government, without any commitment to resolve the issues concerning the University and welfare of its members, the union is left without any option than to declare two weeks warning strike.

This was contained in a statement jointly issued by the ASUU branch Chairman and Secretary, Dr. Mansur Said and Dr.  Yusuf Ahmed Gwarzo respectively, on Wednesday.

The statement said the declaration became necessary after the intervention of several stakeholders within the government and that of ASUU Kano Zone and National delegation without yielding any tangible result.

‘’The branch at its congress of 29th May 2024 resolved to embark on two weeks warning strike with immediate effect,’’ the statement said.

SolaceBase reports that the demands of the union include, reinstatement/reconstitution of the University Governing Council dissolved about a year ago, nonpayment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) amounting to One hundred seventy-eight million, seven hundred five thousand, seven hundred thirty-five naira and ninety-one kobo (₦178,705,735.91).

Others are payment of arrears of salary consequential adjustment for the 2019 minimum wage which stand at One hundred eleven million, three hundred twenty-one thousand, seven hundred ninety-two naira and eighteen kobo (₦111,321,792.18), nonpayment of twenty thousand naira 20,000 hardship cushion effect to staff of the University, non-implementation of wage award of 25% and 35% and stoppage of the introduction of KIPPIS in the University.

The union in the statement said to avert further escalation of the strike action, ‘’we are calling on well-meaning people of Kano State and Nigeria in general to prevail on the state government to without delay resolve the issues as stated above.
