UPDATED : NLC, others draw battle line with Ganduje, threaten industrial action over salary, pension deductions

The Joint session of Nigerian Labour Congress, (NLC), Trade Union Congress, TUC and Joint Negotiation Council, (JNC) have vowed to declare strike action, furtherance to any deduction of workers salaries’ and pension in Kano state.

Solacebase reports that the joint session also threatened to institute legal action against Kano state government, failure to urgently refund deductions of November and December 2020.

At a joint news conference on Friday, Kano NLC Chairman, Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir expressed disappointment the unilateral decision of the government to reduce workers’ salaries despite the economic impact on poor masses.

According to the unions, the Kano state government has no basis to reduce works salaries when Lagos State that suffered height and a more deadly hit of COVID-19 pandemic pays its workers.

The unions thereby urged Kano state government to desist from taking further measures that will damage workers mutual relationship with government, hesitate that industrial peace and harmony may not be guaranteed after what.

In their five-point resolution, the joint Labour unions maintained that ” minimum wage is a product of tripartite negotiation and cannot, therefore, under whatever circumstances be subjected to unilateral review.

” Salary and Pension are legitimate rights Not privileges that can be exploited and manipulated anyhow. The level of maturity exhibited by the labour centres arising from the unilateral deduction of salary and pension of workers and should not be taken for granted by the government.

“Labour centres are not ready to accept any further unilateral deduction as any attempt would left unions with no other alternative than to take appropriate legal and, or industrial action to seek for redress”.

Minjibir assured all workers and pensioners commitment to promoting and protecting the interest at all times.
