Supreme Court Justices’ Appointments: NBA requests lawyers to apply

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has commenced the process of appointing more justices to join the bench.

There are 21 slots available to be occupied but eight are needed. The number reduced after the retirement of some Justices.

The slots are North-Central (2), North-West (1), South-East (2), South-South (1), South-West (2); no vacancy for the North-East.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, has urged blocs in the legal profession and the judiciary to nominate candidates.

They include the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), heads of courts as well as judges of the nation’s highest court.

President of NBA,  Yakubu Maikyau  already sent a memo to lawyers after receiving the notice from Ariwoola on Friday, June 16.

Maikyau said the CJN asked him “to nominate suitably qualified candidates to be recommended for appointment to the Supreme Court of Nigeria”.

According to Maikyau, interested lawyers from the regions are to submit their expression of interest to the NBA secretariat in Abuja on or before 21 June.
