PROFILE: Kano APC governorship candidate, Nasiru Gawuna

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Kano Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna was born on August 6, 1967.

He is a descendant of Garba Gawuna and Sheikh Hassan Gawuna families on the paternal and maternal lineages respectively.

The two illustrious families were among the first settlers at Gawuna Quarters, Nassarawa Local Government Area over 200 years ago.

Gawuna is the third son of Alhaji Yusuf and Hajiya Fatima’s twelve children.

Nasiru Gawuna started Qur’anic and Islamiyya School when he was about 3 years old. He was later enrolled at Gawuna Primary School in the year 1973 for the commencement of his western education which he did concurrently with the qur’anic school.

He completed Gawuna Primary School in 1979, and the following year, he enrolled at Government Secondary School Gwaram (Now in Jigawa State) where he did his junior secondary school.

The young and exuberant Gawuna, who was recognized by his peers as one of the most brilliant and disciplined students, took the Science Secondary Schools examination in 1981 and aced it with flying colors.

After completing his education at Science Secondary School Dawakin Kudu in 1984, he gained admission into Ahmadu Bello University’s School of Basic Studies in Zaria for a year preliminary study. He finished his preliminary in 1985.

He then proceeded to the prestigious Usman Danfodiyo University, where he graduated in 1990 with a degree in Biochemistry.

Gawuna had his one-year national service, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at Enugu Medical Center, Awkunanu, Enugu State.

He began his career in public service as an electoral officer with the then National Electoral Commission (NEC)

After the National Electoral Commission was dissolved by the then Head of State, Late General Sani Abacha, Gawuna,  subsequently joined the Kano State Hospitals Management Board as a laboratory technician and eventually rose to the post of Chief Laboratory Officer.

He later joined active politics, pitching his tent with All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and contested for the position of Chairman, Nasarawa Local Government Council.

He won the general election in 2004 and from there, he ascended to become Kano State Deputy Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).

Nasiru Gawuna was later awarded an honorary doctorate in public health management by the Columbus International University in the British Virgin Islands for his contributions to the healthcare industry in 2005 and was re-elected  as council boss in 2007.

Dr. Gawuna received Awards from the House of Representatives Committee on State and Local Government in 2009 and 2010 as a reward for his service of excellence.

Under the administration of Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as Kano State governor, Gawuna was appointed the state commissioner for Agriculture in 2014,

In 2015, when Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was elected into the office as governor of Kano State, he reappointed Nasiru Gawuna as commissioner of Agriculture,

With the resignation of Kano State deputy governor, Prof. Hafizu Abubakar in 2018, Ganduje nominated  Gawuna as deputy and also retained his portfolio of commissioner for agriculture.

Dr. Gawuna founded the Annassiriyya Islamic Propagation Center to carry on his grandparents’ historical activities of supporting the needy and also with the establishment of N Gawuna Foundation.

The APC Gubernatorial Candidate in Kano State was one-time National President of the Usman Danfodiyo University Alumni Association from 2009 to 2012, he was the National President of the Youth Sport Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) since 2011.

Dr. Gawuna is a recipient of various honors, some of which include the National Police Award in 2005, the Nigerian Union of Journalists Award in 2006, and the Usman Danfodiyo University Alumni Award in 2011.

Dr. Gawuna’s hobbies include reading, football and table tennis or travelling.

He is married to Hajiya Hafsat with children.
