KAROTA Translates Traffic Laws To Hausa For Motorists

Kano State Road And Traffic Agency (KAROTA ) says it had commenced the process of translating its 95 different laws into the Hausa language as part of an effort to make it easier for people to understand.

KAROTA Deputy Managing Director, Malam Ibrahim Bala stated this at Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) second Coordination meeting with stakeholders in the Justice sector in Kano on Thursday.

He said as soon as the translation of the laws was completed, the agency would direct motorists and other road users to go and purchase copies from the government printing press.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that KAROTA was established by the administration of former Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso to complement the regular road traffic officers in checking recklessness among motorists as well as enforce traffic rules and regulations, especially in Kano metropolis.

The Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), an NGO called for regular training and retraining of personnel of Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) to keep them abreast of the agency’s laws and modern traffic management.

The PRAWA Assistant Programme Head, Mr Mohammed Usman, made the appeal in a remark at the event.

He said there was a need for the agency to ensure that its personnel were given adequate training to enable them to discharge their duties effectively and with decorum.

“There is a need for sensitisation of the public on the laws of agency. We need to develop behaviour modification of the officers,” he said.

He also stressed the need for massive sensitisation of the public on the laws of KAROTA as according to him many road users are not aware of the numerous laws of the agency.

The event with the theme “Advocating for the decriminalisation and declassification of petty offences in Nigeria”, was organised by PRAWA with support from Open Society Initiative of West Africa (OSIWA).

NAN also reports that participants at the meeting were drawn from various agencies including the Police, Nigeria Correctional Services and the Judiciary. (NAN)
