The announcement by the coordinator of the national cash transfer programme Dr Temitope Sinkaiye that N1.6 billion would be shared to 84, 000 beneficiaries from 15 local governments areas of Kano state has generated a lot of confusion within the people of the state as it was reported that, each beneficiary would get N20,000.

While many believed that, the stipends would be shared among every member of the society as part of government efforts to ease the economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic and that they still didn’t receive anything from the government after waiting for the manna to reach them.
However, according to the coordinator of the national cash transfer program Dr Temitope Sinkaiye, contrary to popular assumptions, beneficiaries are drawn from an existing program that began 2 years ago and that the already listed beneficiaries have been benefiting from the N5, 000 stipends they received each month.
She added that, due to some logistic and official changes that led to the transfer of the programme from the office of Vice President to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the beneficiaries didn’t receive payment for four months adding that, the N20, 000 is arrears of the four months allowances.
According to a Kano resident, Malam Uba Mado, the federal government had contradicted issues on the much-publicized intervention to the masses on COVID-19 pandemic stressing that people have been waiting for the stimulus as announced but they have been getting contradictory responses.
“When we heard about the N1.6 billion we thought every vulnerable in Kano will get the N20, 000 but we were told that it is not meant for us. Are we not Nigerians or are we not affected by the crisis brought about by COVID-19?” he asked.
