A female social media influencer in Kano State, Suliyat Idris Adeleye has sensitised some students in the state on the safety of the use of the internet, especially among the youths.
Speaking at the sensitisation, Suliyat Idris who is the founder of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), ‘Smart Clicks’, said the aim of the exercise was to inform the students on the negative and positive impact of the internet.
According to her, the exercise was part of celebrations to mark the 2021 safer Internet Day, celebrated every February, 11th, therefore it was necessary to embark on such sensitisation due to the importance of internet among the students.
“Today is safer internet day celebrated globally, it is also an event first commemorated as an initiative of the safe borders project in 2004 taken up by them in a safe network and has now become a global event, every second week of February.
“This programme was aimed at educating students on how to promote safe internet use among young people and adults alike.

“The year 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic that shutdown the globe actually increased the use of technology for distance learning, Office work, engagement and interactions more than before.
“Greater internet video also means exposure to online risks, especially for the youngest among us. In 2019 over 122 million internet users were recorded while in 2021 we have over 153 million users in Nigeria”, she said.
She further explained that cybercrime, online-bullying, privacy, misinformation and disinformation, hate speech, exposure to harmful content and predatory behaviours have grown since the advent of the COVID-19 crisis.
She said that the NGO was established in Jan. 2020 as a social enterprise to make digital safety education accessible to every stratum of the society whether in a formal, informal, private or public establishment, institution or associations.
The Coordinator, Nigerian Communications Commission Kano Zonal office, Alhaji Shu’aibu Swade, represented by Alhaji Imamu Adamu Aliyu, the Head of Consumer Affairs of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) commended her and said that such effort will help the young ones since they are more active on cyberspace.

“It will enlighten and guide them on how to protect themselves on internet security, cyberstalking, identity theft, website cloning among others.
“Internet is like a physical world, parents, teachers should endeavour to let them know the dangers of cybercrimes and how to deal with it”, he said.
One of the students from El-Buhajj royal Academy, Fatima Aminu thanked smart clicks for sensitising them more on internet security and safety.
