NGOs urge Kano govt. to prioritise sustainable development initiatives

Kano Network of NGOs (KANET), a non-governmental organizations forum committed to fostering development and progress in the state, has urged both the incumbent government and opposition politicians to shift their focus from internal conflicts to sustainable development initiatives.

The NGOs in a statement, Musa Abdullahi Sufi and Nura Ahmad Muhammad, the chairman and the secretary of the steering committee respectively, said the political landscape of Kano has been marred by incessant conflicts and verbal altercations among political stakeholders in the last few months.

“KANET acknowledges the potential of these stakeholders to drive meaningful development in the state but laments the squandering of this potential through fruitless bickering.

“It is disheartening to witness the political infighting that has engulfed Kano State, especially considering the immense opportunities for progress and growth,” remarked a steering committee chair for KANET.

“While neighboring states like Jigawa and Katsina are forging ahead with constructive governance, Kano risks being left behind due to divisive politics,” the statement added.

“The detrimental effects of this discord are evident and not limited to: promotion of disunity among Kano citizens, threat to lives and properties, erosion of respect, obfuscation of government failures, deterrence to competent leaders, and politicization of sectors.

“In light of these challenges, KANET proposes civic education, focus on governance, enactment of laws to deter disrespectful behavior and prevent violence in the political arena, engagement of experts and advisors to inform policy decisions and governance strategies and establishment of robust mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability in government programmes.
