Nigerian student jailed 12 years for rape in UK
Abiola Tijani, a 30-year-old Nigerian student in the UK, has been sentenced to 12 years and three months for rape.
A report published by the Mirror newspaper stated that Sheffield Crown Court convicted Tijani last Thursday of raping a woman who was on her way home after celebrating the completion of her A-Level exams.
The incident occurred on the night of July 29, 2023, shortly after the woman had assisted her friend into a taxi for a safe ride home.
Tijani followed the young woman as she walked alone that night before he pushed her against some railings at an underpass near Sheffield City Centre, where he raped her.
During the hearing on Thursday, November 9, Tijani received a sentence of 12 years and three months in prison, with eight years and three months to be served in custody and four years on license.
He was also issued a lifetime restraining order barring any contact with the victim.
While passing the sentence, the judge was quoted to have said: “No sentence I pass will undo the harm you caused or be considered adequate. What you did is every woman’s worst nightmare.”
Meanwhile, a post shared by Toyyib Adewale Adelodun, a Nigerian X user, on Sunday morning revealed that Tijani arrived in the UK as a student in January 2023.
