NLNG commissions 1 health facility project at AKTH.

Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas has restated its commitment to supporting the healthcare delivery system and strengthening the medical field in Nigeria.

NLNG Managing Director Dr. Philip Mshelbila stated this at the commissioning of the occupational therapy and neuro-modulation rehabilitation center provided by the company on Thursday at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), in Kano.

He said, “We are also taking up these responsibilities as intervention and support, because achieving universal health coverage for a nation of over 200 million people, is a race against time. We hope that more organizations like us would intervene in the healthcare delivery system, and collectively, our support would have far-reaching effects which would strengthen the medical field in Nigeria.”

“While our intervention today takes up a slice of the financial need in our home country’s health sector, we do note that for the sake of sustainability, and in anticipation of a nation that is projected to have a population of 400 million people in about 27 years or thereabout, preventive healthcare and healthy lifestyles are imperative for national wherewithal,” Dr. Mshelbila said.

In a remark at the occasion, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Chief Medical Director, Prof Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe stated that the intervention would go a long way in supporting healthcare delivery in Kano.

Prof. Sheshe said, “The decision was for us to build a rehabilitation center because we don’t have one in Kano, and we have large numbers of people with disabilities that will greatly benefit from this facility. The services will support people with disabilities, especially children that are usually born with developmental challenges, patients with stroke, and drug addicts that need to undergo rehabilitation.”

“This project started on the 16th of May, 2022 and today we are here to commission this great project. This is just 50% of what we intend for the center, the other 50% was not completed due to limited resources. And we hope shortly we will be able to complete the rest.

SOLACEBASE reports that the newly commissioned Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital project consists of a two-winged bungalow with associated facilities: a female ward, a children’s ward, a nurses’ station, and a ward round room.

The therapy wing consists of an EEG room, RTMS room, ECT room, patient waiting room, recovery room, physiotherapy hall, and skill acquisition hall with associated toilet facilities. The building is also equipped with a smoke & fire alarm detecting system, CCTV, and intercom systems.

Meanwhile, the project was secured under the NLG limited Hospital Support Programme by Dr Rabiu Sulaiman, a Member of the NLNG Board of Directors.

Dr. Sulaiman said the project is part of NLNG’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) which is carried out in all the regions of the country.

‘’This project is a contribution to Nigeria’s Health Care delivery services, which we believe as a company, that government cannot do it alone. And this project is intended to provide part of that support and it is particularly addressing the challenges facing men and women with physical disabilities/challenges and are strongly encouraged to come for rehabilitation in this center.”

“It is so unique that this is the first of its kind in Kano and the North-western region and with time people will start to realize the impact it will have on the lives of the people.”

Sulaiman added that “the initial budget that was put together was about $500,000 (Over N300m as of then) so that was the total investment and contribution by the company.
