PHOTOS: Kano shuts 4 Chinese waste collection centres

By Victor Christopher. Kano State Government in collaboration with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Association of Cartons and Waste Recycling Dealers of Nigeria (ACREWDON) has sealed four Chinese Waste Collection Centres in the state

Chairman, Taskforce on Revenue Collection under the state Ministry of Commerce, Adamu Umar said the closure of the collection centres became necessary as they were operating without requisite papers.

Solacebase reports that Umar said they served notices to the operators but they refused to obliged as the centres were found not to have any payment papers to serve as evidence of operating legally.

Also addressing Journalists during the exercise, the National President of ACREWDON, Comrade Salisu Ali Yarima said that it took the Association four years to actualize the dream.

“This lingering issue is worrisome as for the past 4 years we were battling to actualize this dream for shutting down the collection centers with a view to allowing the indigenous collection centres to operate and be the sole suppliers of raw materials for waste cartons and rubber to the Chinese industries.

“This action will increase wealth in respect of our business and above all will pave way for at least 20,000 youth employment in the state who are as of now rendered jobless due to the illegal take over of the business by the Chinese firms.

The ACREWDON National President hinted that the firms were shut because of the inability of the Chinese firms to produce certificate of trade registration for the year 2020 – 2021, lack of certificate of business registration for the year 2020-2021, and, lack of evidence of business permit, inability to produce names and the qualification of their present employees.

Mr Yarima commended the Kano state Government for taking the step saying, “the Government of Kano State is the first to comply with Mr. President’s Executive order which prohibited the Federal Ministry of Interior not to issue Visa to any foreigner whose skills are readily available in Nigeria and another directive given to the Comptroller General of Immigration to ensure that no Chinese firm should engage in retail business because it is a crime.”

Also speaking, the Kano State Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ado Riruwai commended efforts of the Kano Government and described the act by the Chinese firms as worrisome.

He appealed to the Chinese firms operating waste collection in the state to establish recycling industries instead of refilling with a view to improve the socio-economic wellbeing of the people and also employ indigenes of the state.
