PHOTOS: {Ramadan}: Kano anti-graft commission moves to end artificial price increase
Two major essential commodities’ companies in Nigeria, BUA Group and Dangote Group, on Friday assured Kano residents and other northern parts of the country of a steady supply of food items at a normal rate during the month of Ramadan.
Solacebase reports that it is an annual occurrence during the month of Ramadan for prices of food items to sky-rocket due to hoarding and artificial scarcity at the expense of the consumers especially in Kano, a predominantly Muslim environment.
The companies gave the assurance at a meeting summoned by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti -Corruption Commission where they were also appreciated with letters of commendation by the commission due to efforts to eradicate artificial scarcity with an increase in prices of food items during the month of Ramadan.
Addressing journalists shortly after the meeting, Chairman, Kano State Public Complaints and Anti -Corruption Commission, Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado said the situation is not like that of last year, where the commission had to raid some markets over artificial price increase but rather the major companies are appreciated hundreds of trailers with food items already in the state so as to flood the markets and reduce the hardship on consumers.

‘’Today we are honouring two major food commodity producers in Nigeria (BUA Group and Dangote Group), incidentally the two are even from Kano, with the efforts put in place this year to ensure that there is no scarcity or price increase of food items during the month of Ramadan, ‘’Muhuyi Rimingado said.
‘’They have confirmed to the commission that the companies are not increasing the price of any of their products, hence there is no reason for any trader to inflict hardship on the people by unnecessarily increasing prices of food items.’’
‘’So with this, we deem it necessary to appreciate the companies with letters of commendation.”
In a remark, representative of BUA Group, Alhaji Muhammad Adakawa said over 400 trucks from the company with various food items have already flooded the market.
‘’Presently as I speak with you, we need customers to come to the markets to buy these items as they are already in excess, so there is no way anybody can increase prices when the food items are everywhere,’’ Adakawa said.
Also, Dangote Group representative, Alhaji Salisu Sambajo said the company main food item is sugar that can sustain Kano and other parts of the norths till the end of the fasting period.
Sambajo said, ‘’ We have put necessary measures in place at the markets to ensure that no trader can hoard and create artificial scarcity.’’
Meanwhile, a similar meeting was held at the Kano Public Complaints and Anti- Corruption Commission with Dawanau Grain Market leadership.
The market Chairman, Alhaji Sani Ahmed Kwa while appreciating the commission’s visit to the market some days ago, appealed to the commission to monitor grain traders across the local governments as prices of grains in the Dawanau market have been reduced at this period.
‘’Mr. Chairman, you can send people to find out independently, we have reduced prices of grains, from, millets, to maize, beans and others.’’
Responding, the anti-graft commission Chairman, Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado assured that the commission’s staff at the 44 local government areas will monitor trading activities at major markets to ensure that residents are not swindled through artificial scarcity.
