President Buhari Reacts To $5M Bribery Allegation Against Gov. Ganduje

President Muhammadu Buhari  is aware of  $5m bribery allegation  against Kano state governor  Abdullahi Umar Ganduje but cannot do anything or take any action.

This position was postulated by Spokesman to the President Garba Shehu in a statement issued on Saturday.

Garba Shehu said President Buhari is aware of the video that went viral allegedly showing Ganduje receiving bribe from contractors but there is little or nothing he can do about it.

He said that Governor Ganduje was not accountable to the President.

He noted that the Kano State House of Assembly, that is constitutionally empowered to handle such cases, had already started investigating the matter.

“We all know that the governor is not accountable to the President. The House of Assembly is empowered by law to handle the case and we are all aware that the assembly has started investigating the matter.

He said if it were in the military era, a military Head of State could question a military governor on matters like this. But it is not applicable in a democracy.

“The growing concern by some people has been that the anti-corruption fight at the federal level is not getting to the state and local government levels.

“But the President is helpless as far as the two other tiers of government are concerned. The President can’t force the state and local governments. He has no such powers under the constitution” he said.

An online newspaper , Daily Nigeria had reported and released video clips allegedly showing Governor Ganduje receiving $5m from contractors.

However , Kano State House of Assembly on Monday constituted a seven man committee to investigate the video clips and the story.

Solacebase reported that the committee had summoned the Editor In Chief of the paper, Ja’áfar Ja’afar to inundate it with details and evidences on the story by appearing before it.
