SolaceBase Data: Amid health challenges, Kano suffers from poor health budget execution

A SolaceBase budget performance review has shown that Kano state recorded only 18% budget execution for its health ministry between 2021 and the first quarter of 2024.
In 2021, the state budgeted the sum of N16.4 billion but only spent N5.3 billion.
In 2022, the sum of N18.9 billion was budgeted while only N1.18 billion was spent at the end of the year.
In 2023, the state budgeted to spend N26.7 billion but only spent N13.3 billion at the end of the fiscal year.

In the first three months of 2024, only N98 million was spent of the budgeted N42.5 billion capital expenditure for the health ministry.
Between 2021 and 2023, Kano state spent its highest amount for the health sector in 2023, when the sum of N26.3 billion was spent out of a budgeted sum of N59 billion. Kano has never spent 60% of its total budgeted expenditure for the health sector between 2021 and 2023.

Kano State Many Health Challenges
Kano state has been subjected to health challenges. Reports had noted the poor state of health centres in the state, with many said to lack infrastructure, and lack of skilled labour among other deaths in infrastructure.
SolaceBase had earlier noted how the state fails to spend on water provision, a situation which is said to also worsen healthcare delivery in Kano state.
The mortality rate in Kano is also put at 109 per 1000 live births, infant mortality is also put at 62 for every 1000 live births, while life expectancy stands at 53 years.

Kano state also suffers from issues such as Cholera, leading to deaths, a situation that the poor healthcare system is also said to worsen.
