Street Lights: Reasons For Blackout On Major Roads In Kano- DG
Kano Metropolitan Agency on Sunday said the blackout on major roads (Street lights) in the metropolis is due to ongoing innovation and restructuring to improve on the illumination and reduce monthly cost on diesel to power generators.
Solacebase reports that Kano Metropolitan Agency is saddled with the responsibility of maintaining street lights and beautification of the metropolis.
Director-General, Kano Metropolitan Agency, Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat stated this on a Freedom Radio program monitored in Kano.
Abdullahi Garba Ramat said the agency is changing the bulbs of the lamps throughout the metropolis to environment-friendly ones that consume less watts and would be completed on or before Wednesday.
‘’We are changing the bulbs from the old ones that consume 400 watts each to economic and environment-friendly LED bulbs of 60 watts, that means each street light pole instead of exhausting 800 watts would now exhaust 120 watts each, ‘’said Ramat.
‘’With this situation, we would be able to save at least N150m monthly as the cost of buying diesel for our 149 generators used for powering the street lights is about N200m.’’
‘’So at the end of the day, we would need less than 50 generators to power these street lights as we have mapped out each of the areas into clusters whereby less generators would be needed.

The Director-General said the agency has developed a new strategy to bury its electrical cables to safeguard them from vandals.
Also, he noted that there is strong collaboration with security agencies to prevent vandals from carrying out there acts.
