The United Nations Industrial Development Organization ( UNIDO) has called on Nigerians to sustain the achievement of the National Quality Infrastructure Project in Nigeria that enhanced the quality of goods in the country over the last five years.

Mr. Raymond Tavares said over the last five years, sixty laboratories have been mentored towards accreditation while twenty companies were prepared for international certification in quality , Environmental and food safety management systems.
“Three metrology laboratories have been fully equipped and one metrology society established,” said Tavares.
He noted that with the support from the project, both private and public institutions have gained international recognition and certification.
According to him, “There is the need to have enabling law to back and support the initiative by the Nigeria government so as for the country’s exports to be accepted internationally and improve the health quality of Nigerians through maintenance of quality standard of goods produced.
On his part, UNIDO Technical Advisor, Mr Shaukat Malik said to better understand the benefit of the project, the organization has trained many Nigerians including farmers , transporters, Media professionals and other stakeholders in various sectors so as to sustain increasing awareness on quality, emphasizing that metrology is a necessity for the safety of the local people and the farmers.
In a remark the Director , Weights and Measures at the Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment, Engineer Mohammed Sidi urged the National Assembly to review Weight and Measures Act to suit contemporary situation in the country in line with International best practices.
He noted that the department if accorded the needed support it can generate revenue as high as five hundred billion Naira annually if the government could create an enabling environment to discharge their duties as against meagre revenue it is generating .
In a remark, UNIDO Publicist Chief Moji Makanjuola while appreciating all stakeholders appealed to Media Professionals not to see this as the end of the project but rather continue to sensitize the people on the benefits of quality assurance and standard maintenance.
