Top 10 football players from Northern Nigeria

Football reigns supreme in northern Nigeria, with the region renowned for producing some of the country’s greatest players. 

From Kaduna, Kano, Jos, and other Northern regions, soccer players have emerged, representing Nigeria at the higher level and doing well respectively for their clubs.

Here are 10 footballers from the North who are proudly doing well in their careers;

1. Ahmed Musa

Ahmed Musa plays as a forward and left winger for the Nigeria national team. Born in Jos, he became the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match, after scoring twice against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He is also the first Nigerian to score in two FIFA World Cup competitions, after scoring another brace against Iceland in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

2. Umar Sadiq

Umar Sadiq is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a striker for La Liga club Real Sociedad and the Nigeria national team. Sadiq hails from Kaduna, and formerly represented the Nigeria national under-23 team and was an important member of the squad that won a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

3. Zaidu Sanusi

Zaidu Sanusi is a Nigerian professional footballer from Jega local government in Kebbi State. He plays as a left-back for Portuguese club Porto and the Nigeria national team.

4. Jamilu Collins

Jamilu Collins is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a left-back for EFL Championship club Cardiff City and the Nigeria national team. He was born in Kaduna, and spent his youth years with Abuja Football College Academy.

5. Rabiu Ali

Rabiu Ali is a Nigerian midfielder who plays for Kano Pillars. He is the current captain of Kano Pillars, and is regarded as one of the club’s greatest ever players and one of the best players in Nigerian Professional Football League.

6. Shehu Abdullahi

Shehu Abdullahi is a Nigerian professional footballer born in Sokoto. He plays as a defensive midfielder and defender. He’s played for teams like Kano Pillars, and Bulgaria’s Levski Sofia.

7. Ibrahim Rabiu

Ibrahim Rabiu is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder. Rabiu was born in Kano. And he’s featured for the likes of Sporting CP, PSV, Celtic, Gent, among others.

8. Moses Simon

Moses Simon, born in Jos, is a professional footballer who plays as a forward for Ligue 1 club Nantes and the Nigeria national team. Simon is a product of the GBS Academy, the same football academy that produced the likes of Ahmed Musa.

9. Sunusi Ibrahim

Sunusi Ibrahim is a Nigerian professional footballer born in Nasarawa, and plays as a forward for U.S Major League Soccer club CF Montréal. Born in Keffi, Ibrahim was part of the youth system at FC Basira in Lafia.

10. Alhassan Yusuf

Alhassan Yusuf is a Nigerian professional player who plays as a midfielder for Belgian First Division A club Royal Antwerp and the Nigeria national team. He was born in Kano.

These players have not only brought glory to northern Nigeria but have also significantly contributed to the country’s footballing history.
