UBEC, Oyo SUBEB to build 58 blocks of classrooms, renovate schools
The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in conjunction with Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), is set to commence the construction of 58 blocks of classrooms in some schools in the state.
The Executive Chairman SUBEB, Dr Nureni Adeniran, stated this on Friday at an official meeting with successful bidders for the 2019 UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects, held in Ibadan.
Adeniran, however, urged the contractors to abide by the laid down standard for project execution and deliver high standard projects for the state.
He said that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and some other technical issues, the board had shifted the date for its bid opening exercise twice, which eventually came up on Oct. 8, 2020.

Adeniran commended Gov. Seyi Makinde for the prompt payment of the state’s counterpart funds, thus making it possible for it to quickly draw the 2019 funds from UBEC.
”The sum of N1,519,884,078. 86 was given to complement the matching grant of the equal amount released by the Federal Government, through UBEC, for the implementation of the 2019 FGN-UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects”, he said.
Adeniran further stated that the 2018 FGN-UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects, awarded in January 2020, had reached advanced stages.
He said that about 98 per cent of the projects had been delivered to the benefiting schools, adding that they had added value to the academic activities in those schools.
The SUBEB chairman, therefore, urged the contractors not to renege on the high standard set by the state government, stressing that the present administration had zero tolerance for non-performance.
“In all, the state government and UBEC are rolling out construction of 58 blocks of classrooms; construction of 10 perimeter fences; renovation of 62 blocks of classrooms; 40 lots of supply of furniture.
“Others are drilling of 44 boreholes and procurement of three lots of sporting equipment/facilities,” Adeniran said.
He also said that the state government had set a time- frame for all the projects, urging the contractors to be upright and efficient in their execution.
“Construction of model schools must be delivered in 24 weeks; construction of a block of classrooms in 16 weeks, while those of ECCDE pilot centres and block of three and four classrooms must be ready in 12 weeks,” he said.
Adeniran also enjoined the contractors to adhere strictly to the time-frame allotted for each of the projects, adding the government would not take any excuse. (NAN)
