Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) on Wednesday challenged politicians to take caution with their utterances and demonstrate tolerance in their conduct not to overheat the polity.
It also emphasized the need for religious organization such as Jama’atul Nasril Islam (JNI) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to create avenues to sensitize people to desist from making hate and dangerous speeches either online or offline.
CITAD Coordinator Curbing Hate Speech and Project, Comrade Hamza Ibrahim stated this at a monthly News Conference on monitoring of Hate Speech for the month of July.
“Our monitors captured, analyzed, and documented one hundred and eighty (180) hate speeches targeting different religious, tribes, and regions. The speeches were made on Website, Blogspots, Facebook page and groups as well as Twitter,” said Hamza Ibrahim.
He noted that, hate speeches can create chaos and crisis that can consume a country like what happened in Rwanda in 1994 that led to genocide.
The hate speech coordinator of the NGO, urged social media influencers on all platforms to support the campaign against hate speech by discouraging hate speakers and act of hate speech.
