USAID trains newly elected Gombe assembly members, others on legislative oversight

USAID state2state in collaboration with Gombe state government has organized a 3-day legislative oversight workshop for twenty-four newly elected state assembly members, thirteen secretaries, and a clerk.

SOLACEBASE reports that declaring the workshop opened on Wednesday in Kano, the Speaker of Gombe state House of Assembly Hon. Abubakar Muhammad Luggerewa called on members to take the workshop seriously, as it will guide them on how to carry out their official legislative functions.

Luggerewa said the purpose of the 3-day workshop is to enhance accountability, transparency, and effectiveness of targeted states and Local Governments in Nigeria.

“It is a very good workshop; the time is apt, and the title Legislative oversight will help the incoming members. This will be a good steppingstone for me, to build the capacity of members to carry out their constitutional responsibility.”

He added that USAID State 2 states is a critical partner of Gombe state Government, who before now has been engaging stakeholders in the state on good governance.

In his welcome remarks, the Gombe state Lead (STL) Muhammad Bello Abubakar emphasized the objectives which are to increase the efficiency of sub-national Government operations, Improve sub-national Government responsibility to citizen need/ CSO engagement.

Abubakar opined that oversight is a critical government function performed by the legislature over activities of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs)as well as other governmental legislatively constituted bodies, such as Committees and councils.

” it involves actions taken to review, monitor, and report public sector organizations and other policies, plans, projects, programs and annual budgets.’’

He stated that the functions of the state Assembly are to enact new laws, amend or repeal existing laws, and oversight the executives.

In his goodwill message the Speaker of Kano state House of Assembly, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon Muhammad Belo Butu-butu, called on the Gombe House of Assembly members to take seriously the orientation/ workshop that will aid them in discharging their duties accordingly.

Papers delivered at the workshop were on State Accountability, Transparency, and Effectiveness.
