Kano Commission of Inquiry on Political Violence pledges fairness

The Kano State Commission of Inquiry for Political Violence and Cases of Missing Persons, covering incidents from the 2015 to 2023 elections, has assured of its unwavering commitment to hold accountable those responsible for instigating political violence within the state.

SolaceBase reports that Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, Chairperson of the commission, made this declaration during the inaugural sitting at the High Court of Justice located on Miller Road in Kano State.

Yusuf emphasized that the Commission’s primary objective is to investigate the root causes and contributing factors behind political violence in the State, adding that the commission will identify specific areas where violence related to the 2015, 2019, and 2023 general elections occurred in Kano State.

Furthermore, the commission will diligently identify victims of various forms of violence, including politically motivated incidents and state-sponsored actions. Additionally, it will investigate the prevalent cases of missing persons.

Yusuf stated, “Our aim is to facilitate and ensure that the sponsors and perpetrators of political violence during the 2015, 2019, and 2023 elections, as well as other forms of violence, are brought to justice.”

She highlighted that the Commission’s mandate extends to recommending enduring solutions for these issues. To this end, Yusuf invited individuals, groups, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), as well as victims and their relatives, to submit memoranda or petitions to the Commission starting today.

According to her, these submissions should be directed to the Commission’s Registry, located within the Court premises.

Yusuf assured the general public that the Commission is committed to serving them, promising thorough consideration of petitions and, where necessary, summoning individuals to provide oral evidence.

She reiterated that the Commission will carry out its assigned responsibilities diligently, impartially, and without bias, ensuring justice prevails for the people of Kano State.

The other members of the commission are Amb. lbrahim Waiya Representative of Civil Society Groups,  CP. Muhammad Wakili (Rtd), Retired Commissioner of Police,  Shu’aibu Sule, Esq and Amina Umar Garba, Esq.

Others include; Comr. Kabiru Inuwa Representative of Organized Labour Union, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, Esq,  Director Public Prosecution/MoJ,  Shehu Abdullahi, State Coordinator, National Human Right Commission, AVM. Ibrahim Umaru (Rtd) Director General Special Services and Kabiru Haruna, Sa’ida Sa’ad, Esq and Chairperson, Representative of Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (|CPC) , Aliyu Sulaiman, State Commandant, Member, Representative of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps,  Mahmoud Bello Bari and SP. Umar Sa’idu Abdullahi.

Others are Representatives of Nigerian Police – Kano Command, Secretary to the Commission and Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment.
