Warning Strike: Kano workers extend ultimatum

The organized labour has extended ultimatum issued Kano State Government over deduction of workers salary in the month of May.

Solacebase reports that the organised labour in Kano State comprising NLC, TUC, JPSNC & others had issued a two weeks ultimatum to the state government on 27th May 2020, threatening seven days warning strike.

The workers union had vowed to embark on 7 days warning strike after the expiration of the ultimatum which was expected to end on Monday, 15th June 2020.

Solacebase recalled that workers in Kano were surprised to have discovered a salary deduction in the month of May as they were never informed of such.

Although the state government did not officially announce the deductions in the workers’ salary, sources said the government had to revert to the old minimum wage of N18,000 per month due to the COVID-19 pandemic

A statement issued on Monday and sent to Solacebase Secretary, Joint Negotiating Council Comrade Musa Ahmadu said the extension became necessary due to ongoing discussion with the committee set up by the state government to dialogue on the issue headed by Alhaji Usman Alhaji, Secretary to the State Government.

‘’After extensive deliberations and appraisal of the resolutions so far reached with Government side on some demands by Labour as a result of negotiations with a committee set up by Government under the leadership of Alhaji Usman Alhaji, Secretary to the State Government which sat for four(4) different times precisely on Friday 29th May, Wednesday 3rd  June, Wednesday 10th June and Friday 12th June 2020 and the State Government unreserved Apology to the workers for its’ inability to adequately consult the unions before deductions of May 2020 Salaries were made and also indicating its’ readiness to always make necessary consultations with the unions on matters of this nature, ‘’said the statement.

The statement said all in an efforts to avert the proposed strike,  the organised labour met on Sunday 14th June 2020 and unanimously resolve to extend the ultimatum by additional one (1) week effective from Tuesday,  16th June to Monday 22nd June.

It said this to enables both Parties to make wider consultations on unresolved issues as agreed during the meeting of Friday 12th June 2020 by both Government and Labour sides.

It noted that in an event, an agreement was not reached at the expiration of the one (1) week extension,  the Seven days warning strike will commence from 12:00 midnight of Monday 22nd June 2020 to Monday 29th June 2020.
