The new Governing Council of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano YUMSUK has pledged its commitment to create an excellent environment that will promote both academic and non-academic activities in the institution so that it will serve its stakeholders accordingly.

The newly appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the university, Prof. J. D. Amin, who made the pledge when he led the Governing Council Members of the University on familiarization visit to campuses of the citadel of learning, said they are determined to improve quality and access in the university education.

This was contained in a statement issued by the university, Head, Information, Publications, Protocol and Public Relations Unit Abdullahi Abba Hassan, on Saturday and sent to Solacebase.

‘’Thus, he said, he would achieve this feat by enhancing infrastructure, academic excellence, training and retraining of staff, their welfare and cordial relationship among the stakeholders of the university,’’ the statement said.

Solacebase reports that Prof. Amin assured the University Community that the new Governing Council had come to move the university to greater height and consolidate on the efforts of the past council members.

He solicited the support of the entire university community towards achieving the set goals.

‘’I plan to work with the management of the university to come up with strategic plan on some things that need to be rejigged.

‘’We will take stock of the journey so far, so that we will know where we want to be and how to chart a new course for it.

‘’I am happy the university has a good gender mix, thus it has more females than males.

‘’We intend to further support girl-child education because it is very important to the development of any society. We need to emphasise on that,” the new Pro-Chancellor said.

‘’We emphasise entrepreneurship because it is very much in line with culture of the people of Kano in particular, as the state is the home of commerce.

‘’We will emphasise on programs that will make students self-reliant – courses that will give students job. We will create new courses to support the students.

‘’We want to create image of an institution that will continue to impact positively to the society,’’ Prof. J.D. Amin stated.

He added: ‘’The university should take advantage of its present strength and address its weaknesses, and other threats and seize the opportunity and move forward, the state and the country at large.’’

He described the university as a young promising institution with a lot of potentials and good solid foundation.

‘’  The institution has a good number of undergraduate programs, postgraduate programs, a lot of projects on-going . It has a lot of features that distinguish it as a university,’’ he noted.

According to him, the progress so far made by the university, both in academic and infrastructural fields is superb.

The Pro-Chancellor thanked the management and staff of the Yusuf Maitama Sule University and the  community for the warm reception accorded him.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa took the new Pro Chancellor and members of the Governing Council round some campuses of the institution to familiarize with facilities there.

At the Main Campus, they visited Senate Building, Main Library, School of Post Graduate Studies, Faculties of Basic Medical Science, Education, Social and Management Science and on-going construction of those of Science and Humanities among other facilities at the campus.

At Kwanar Dawaki, they inspected laboratories of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology Departments, while at the College of Health Sciences Magwan, the council inspected the whole building that houses Office of the Provost, lecture halls and others.

Also places inspected by the council at the City Campus included offices, lecture halls and laboratories.
