An expert on nutrition has called on authorities concerned to provide breastfeeding friendly places at workplaces to encourage breastfeeding among working mothers.
Dr Salisu Maiwada of Nutritional Society of Nigeria made the call on Monday during stakeholders meeting on nutrition organized by Civil Society Scaling-Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) held in Kano as part of activities marking the global World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) campaign that aims to inform, anchor, engage and galvanize action on breastfeeding and related issues.
According to him, the world breastfeeding week celebrated every 1-7 of August is an annual event celebrated every year adding that providing breastfeeding-friendly environment will assist in having healthy children as mothers will feel free to feed their infants adding that effective breastfeeding reduces incidence and severity of infectious diseases, thereby lowering infant morbidity and mortality as it provides ideal nutrition for infants and contributes to their healthy growth.
