Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State says Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano will soon be among the country’s leading development centers of research.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Information Officer Ministry for Higher Education, Malam Sunusi Kofar-Na’Isa on Sunday in Kano.

Yusuf, who is the visitor of the university, declared this during a familiarisation visit to the institution.

The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Kofarmata, explained that this would be achieved with the track record of achievements, courageous and committed staff, both academic and non-academic as well as good governance by the management of the university.

“How we wish the university have received utmost guidance and a higher level of consideration by the defunct government, the story would have been beyond measurable imagination,” he said.

The visitor implored the principal officers, academic and non-academic unions to continue to work as a team towards taking the institution to greater heights.

He pledged to seek for appointment with all relevant agencies to deliver on this task, starting with the completion of projects in the institution.

Yusuf reiterated his administration’s willingness to give a facelift to the university with a view to attaining a standard of global best practice.

“Symbolically, it symbolizes the North western region, though the name of the university has been changed, but miraculously if you look at the university logo geographical map of the Northwest remains.

“The aims and objectives of the university as envisaged by Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, the Founder of the university, was for the university to serve, unify, revive, and transform the region educationally.

“This was conceived right before the emergence and deterioration of security issues that lowered the social and economic activities of the region.

“It is worth noting that the past government clutter will be hard to forget.

“Their selfish quest for land encroachment into the boundary of the university is well noting; we are all aware that even the changing of the name of the university is ill political rivalry at the expense of the greater regional goal,” he maintained.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mukhtari Kurawa, said the visit would go a long way towards having a first-hand knowledge about the progress and problems of the institution.

He said being the current administration possesses the courage and confidence that the government would look into unsolved mysteries for possible solutions.

On their part, the university’s unionists and other stakeholders requested the government to return the facility at Kwanar Dawaki, compensation of facility at Dawakin-Tofa to the varsity as well as increasing monthly overheard cost payment of lingering allowance to their members. (NAN)
