The Centre For Awareness On Justice and Accountability(CAJA)on Tuesday calls for inauguration of anti-corruption offices across the 44 local government areas of the state as promised by the state government to strengthen the fight against corruption.

The nongovernmental organization requested the state government to fulfill the pledge to coincide with the nation’s independence celebration 1st October, 2018.

CAJA Executive Director   Comrade Kabir Sa’idu Dakata made the call at a news conference held in Kano on Tuesday.

“The establishment of the offices at the local government areas would bring the commission closer to the people and encourage them to report corruption cases without fear,” said Comrade Dakata.

“ Kano state is the only state with a state owned anti corruption commission in Nigeria. The commission has been in existence since 2005 but it recently become more functional as a result of appointing more competent leaders and qualified staff to fight corruption in the state. The commission is also committed to applying more effective strategies not only to succeed in the implementation of its mandate, but also to ensure sustainability in the fight against corruption”.

He explained that the government needs to do more in the area of welfare of anti corruption staff so as to address the possible staff turnover that might affect the commission, noting that with an improved welfare package the staff will not be thinking of leaving the commission for other good jobs somewhere.

He emphasized that the emolument of the staff should be different from the conventional civil servants to encourage them and get their commitment

“While we commend the great strides made by the commission to position itself to sustain the fight against corruption in Kano state, we believe there is room for improvement, particularly in the area of adopting more inclusive strategies that will accommodate the support and participation of the marginalized groups especially Youth, Women and People with Disability”.

Centre for Awareness on Justice and Accountability (CAJA), a Civil Society Organization that is campaigning for good governance, anti corruption and justice reform in Nigeria. CAJA in partnership with the Youth Alive Foundation (YAF) and with support from DFID, is currently implementing a project aimed at increasing Youth Participation in the fight Against Corruption (Y-PAC), in Kano State.
