COVID-19: Gov. Sule inaugurates distribution of CACOVID palliatives in Nasarawa state

Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa on Tuesday in Lafia inaugurated the second phase distribution of palliatives donated by Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID), to the vulnerable people in the state.

Sule, while inaugurating the distribution exercise, said that the 35 trucks of different food items received from CACOVID was part of its support to complement government’s efforts at cushioning the effects of hunger occasioned by the  COVID-19 pandemic.

The governor commended CACOVID and other philanthropists for their humanitarian gesture aimed at assisting the less-privileged and vulnerable groups in the society during the pandemic.

He said that the items would be distributed to the poor and most vulnerable across the 1,495 polling units in the state,  who have no source of income to cater for their daily needs.

Sule, however, said those salary earners, businessmen and other privileged people were exempted.

He recalled that Nasarawa State Government in its commitment to cushioning the plight of its people during the COVID-19 lockdown period procured and distributed 12 trucks of rice across the 13 Local Government Areas of the State.

He said the government  has strengthened the Palliatives Distribution Committees at the Local Government, wards and polling unit levels to ensure transparency in the distribution exercise.

He charged the State Steering Committee on COVID-19 to ensure strict supervision of the distribution process, noting that the palliative committee at all levels would be held accountable for any anomaly in the exercise.

“I charge you to justify the confidence government reposed in you by ensuring transparency and fairness in the distribution of these palliatives,” he said.

While thanking individuals and organisations for their contributions towards the fight against the pandemic, Sule said that Government remained committed to the fight against COVID-19 and would continue to enforce all the preventive measures.

Earlier, Aliyu Ubandoma, Secretary to the State Government, said that the state received 35 trucks of different food items.

He listed the food items to include: 43,246 cartons of noodles, 20,590 of pasta, 21,000 bags of rice, 18,000 bags of semovita, 240, 000 bags of sugar, 181,000 bags of salt and 600 gallons of groundnut oil.

A representative of CACOVID, Alh. Gidado Jamilu, while presenting the palliative to the governor, said it was their little efforts aimed at supporting and complementing government efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. (NAN)
