COVID-19: Litmus Test For Electorates And The Elects

4

The pandemic coronavirus outbreak that brought the world to a standstill is indeed an issue that the history of the world will never forget. It is a situation that has erased a lot of ill vices between individuals, organizations as well as countries.

No doubt it has exceeded the level of apportioning blames to either a nation or a particular individual, as pandemic as it is, it requires a very calculative and systematic approach to it and as a well-meaning global citizen, I strongly believe that in a short period a positive approach that will put an end to this drastic situation will soon be reached.

However, it is so sad and disheartening the way and manner the whole episode of the pandemic COVID-19 is being treated in Nigeria. It is vividly clear that instead of the Nigerian authorities to convince Nigerians on positive measures, they kept confusing the poor to an extent that the poor believed that the virus isn’t meant for him but for the elite.

In situations where responsive and responsible governments were busy finding ways to ease the situation that may arise from emergency measures that are taken by the government vis-à-vis COVID-19; in Nigeria, the case is quite different as every day comes with a new political pronouncement without political will.

I was so saddened to come to the realization that, the elite have not deemed it fit to come up with measures of alleviating the suffering of the people they claimed to be representing even when one of them had suggested that they should raise N360m to support the fight against COVID-19 spread.

These are the same people that littered our streets, walls of our homes and our schools structures with their posters canvassing for our votes. These are the people distributing soaps, wrappers, shirts bearing their pictures while campaigning for our votes. The question here is, don’t we deserve at least a free posters educating us on COVID-19 or a free sanitizer with their pictures?

This is Nigeria for us, we no longer matter to those we have elected to represent us because they are presently not in need of our votes.

COVID-19 pandemic is indeed a litmus test for every Nigerian electorate, we have seen our worth in the eyes of the people we call our leaders and we have now known who matters to whom. It is now in our domain to make judicial use of what we have to get what we want as electorates with a right to vote.

A word they say is enough for the wise.
