Contrary to what the Kano state government had earlier announced that it will only slash the salaries of political office holders in the state, no fewer than some minutes of receiving their May salaries, the state workers have discovered that there has been a slash in their salaries.
According to staff with the teachers’ service board, Malam Shan’unu Baba, his may salary came with a slash of N10, 300.
Malam Shan’unu Baba said he wasn’t expecting any cut in his salary as the government had assured workers in the state that it will only reduce political office holders’ salaries and not that of the civil servant.
The school teacher further revealed that the slash affected all sectors in the state civil service adding that, the Sallah celebrations will definitely be with a lot of minuses.
“This COVID-19 has reduced us to mere walking corpses, just imagine receiving your hard-earned salary with a slash of thousands of Naira, this is not fair at all. God id our witness, workers are suffering,” he said.
Another civil servant with the ministry of environment Shehu Bala told Solacebase that he and all his colleagues have witnessed a slash in their May salary and no one is making any explanation to them adding that the cut will surely affect their Sallah preparation.
According to him, what he collected today as his May salary was exactly what he was collecting under the N18, 000 minimum wages era. However, the unexpected salary cut by the state government had generated a lot of mixed reactions
Efforts to get reactions from the State Government proved abortive as the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Abba Anwar and Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Saliu Tanko Yakasai did not pick their calls.
However, a source close to the government told Solacebase that the governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said the state has to revert to the old rate of N18,000 minimum wage as the government cannot pay salary with the new rate of N30,000 minimum wage.
It could be recalled that, in Kano state, the state government announced that workers salaries will not be reduced or slashed. The state government had recently announced that political office holders will henceforth be receiving half salaries due to shortfall in the federation account and collapse in the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) as a result of economic challenges posed by COVID-19 pandemic.
