Dangote Donates Mobile Test Centre, 10 Ambulances To Fight COVID-19 In Kano

Kano state government has taken delivering of Mobile Molecular Diagnostic Centre for COVID-19 donated by Aliko Dangote Foundation sited at Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital.
The 54gene mobile testing laboratory with 40ft structure steel container built technology provides a unique plug-and-play solution to eliminate logistics of shipping samples to another infrastructure for processing.
Also donated by the richest man in Africa, Alh. Aliko Dangote are 10 ambulances and three official vehicles as part of corporate supports to strengthen the war against the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic in Kano.
Unlike the existing Centre activated by Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) with a testing capacity of 80 samples daily, the Multi-billion Dangote pathology laboratory is enabled to examine 400 samples per day and would increase to 1,000 capacity by May, 10.

Besides, Aliko Dangote had earlier donated a 500-bed space isolation centre situated at Sani Abacha Stadium to Kano state government, to accommodate the surge in the figure of positive cases in Kano.
Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje applauded the philanthropic effort of Alhaji Aliko Dangote for donating Mobile Testing Centre to the state.
He said, “it is well applauded to have such very important facility in the state – a new established Mobile Testing Centre has the capacity of conducting 400 tests daily.”
Ganduje revealed that “As we are targeting more Testing Centres in the state, the richest man in Africa, Alhaji Aliko Dangote as a son of the soil donates this Mobile Testing Centre with the capacity of testing 400 people daily which will eventually be increased”.
Earlier, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Aliko Dangote Foundation, Zouera Youssoufou, said that the gesture was a philanthropic endeavour of Aliko Dangote to direct a molecular diagnostics firm specialized in the research, and diagnostics based in Lagos, to as a matter of urgency set up a 1,000 test/day capacity laboratory in Kano State.
According to Youssouffou, the newly established 54Gene was accredited by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and has already set up labs in Lagos and in the Ogun States.
Speaking on the efforts of the Foundation to assist the Federal Government in curtailing the spread of COVID-19, Youssoufou, said that Dangote Foundation is determined to increase the number of testing centres nationwide through Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID) to the NCDC on increasing test centres across the country.
She explained: “CACOVID is already setting up a 310-bed isolation centre at Sani Abacha stadium in Kano. We are extending that capacity by another 150 beds at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano, which is being converted into an isolation centre now. These two centres will be operational pending the final validation by the Infection Prevention and Control team, which we expect will be completed in the coming days.”
Youssoufou added that ADF is also supporting the Rapid Response Teams in their work to identify suspected COVID-19 cases across the healthcare centres in Kano. “ADF will immediately handover to the Kano Rapid Response Team, 10 new ambulances, two vehicles and PPEs to support the transportation of patients from different parts of the state”.

On training, she disclosed that: “We are supporting training and incentives for COVID-19 health workers. We will provide hazard incentives and protections for the healthcare and lab workers who are working on the covid-19 response. We are also providing training to them, initially online and via distance learning, and will complement his with in-person training in Kano under strict IPC protocols developed in conjunction with the NCDC.
Speaking at the scene, the Chairman Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, Dr Sani Gwarzo reiterated Buhari led administration’s commitment to curtail the spread of the disease in the state, adding that “President Muhammadu Buhari has personally directed him and Nigeria Center for Disease Control NCDC to assist Kano.”
Similarly, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of 54gene, Dr Abasi Ene-Obong, the 40ft structure built with container technology, would provide a unique plug-and-play solution that eliminates the logistics of shipping samples to another infrastructure for processing.
This, he said would reduce the turnaround times for test results and allows clinicians to manage and treat patients accurately, sooner rather than later.
He stated that “Our mobile lab is fully equipped with all the vital instruments required for COVID-19 testing, and allows us to quickly offer our services to multiple states due to the ease of transport. Its unique plug and play feature eliminates the logistics of shipping samples to another location for the processing which reduces turnaround times for test results and allows clinicians to manage and treat patients accurately, sooner rather than later.”
The new established 54Gene project was according to the foundation accredited by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and would commence operations today, Sunday, May.
