Dollar Videos: Court orders Ganduje to pay Daily Nigerian, Jaafar Jaafar N400,000 each

A Nigerian-based online news medium, Daily Nigerian and its publisher, Jaafar Jaafar, have requested a Kano State High Court to order the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to pay N400 million to compensate for wasting their time and attempting to discredit their reputation and integrity.

Solacebase reports that Ganduje, who took both defendants to court, over video clips allegedly showing the him collecting $5m bribe and gleefully stuffing the money given to him in his pocket. hence claiming damages for defamation, on Tuesday applied to discontinue the suit without giving any cogent reasons.

Counsel to the plaintiff, Offiong Offiong, SAN, Tuesday moved an application requesting the court to discontinue with the case of defamation filed against Jaafar Jaafar and his medium before the court.

Offiong informed the court that the plaintiff reserve the unfettered right to approach the court to ask it to discontinue the case, urging the court to strike out the suit.

In his response, Jafar Jafar through his counsel,  barrister U U. Eteng argued that the plaintiff could not just resort to asking the court to discontinue the case.

He stressed that the case has lasted for over three years, adding that the defendants have incurred huge expenses while the matter lasted., he then prayed the court to grant against Abdullahi Umar Ganduje N100million as cost.

Eteng also requested the court to order the plaintiff to write a pre-action letter to the defendant notifying him about any further action that is intended to be initiated against the self-exiled Jaafar Jaafar by the plaintiff or his agents or privy in respect of the widely circulated video.

Counsel to Daily Nigerian, Barrister Mohammed Danazumi also prayed the court to award N300 million as a cost against Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

He opined before the court that, Daily Nigerian the second defendant in the matter, is a corporate entity, alleging that the entity has allegedly suffered severe image damage.

The presiding judge, justice Suleiman Baba Na’mallam in his ruling struck out the case.
