Emir expresses support for castration as punishment for rape

The Emir of Karaye in Kano state Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar II has expressed support for castration of rapists as a sanction in the country.

The Emir expressed the support while receiving the state commissioner of women affairs and social development Dr.  Zahra’u Muhammad Umar during an advocacy visit to the palace.

A statement issued on Monday by Karaye emirate council, Information Officer, Haruna Gunduwawa said Alhaji  Ibrahim Abubakar II emphasised that,  taking such drastic punishment on the perpetrators of the act would serve as lesson to others.

Solacebase reports that the Kano House of Assembly on July 15, unanimously adopt castration as punishment for rape although, the State Council of Ula­mas stood against it , stating that the punishment of castration for rape is against the teaching of Islam.

‘’The Emir maintained that, raping as an atrocity has become worrysome in the society which need all hands to be put together towards addressing the problem, said the statement.

‘’On the drugs abuse, the Monarch said,  establishment of community policing programme across the state will greatly assist towards decreasing the menace.’’

In the statement, the Emir said Karaye Emirate would remain committed in ensuring community policing committees were establish at all villages and wards so as to assist security agencies in combating crimes in the emirate.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of women affairs and social development Dr Zahra’u Muhammad Umar said she was at the Emir’s palace to solicit royal support toward carrying out enlightenment against raping, divorce and drugs abuse.

‘’Dr.  Zahra’u Muhammad Umar noted that, due to COVID-19 these atrocities were on the increase.’’

The Commissioner expressed optimism that,  with full support of the traditional rulers,  the enlightenment would yield  fruitful result in view of their proximity to people at the grassroots.
