International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) on Friday condemned the use of primary school pupils to stage a protest against video clips, published by Daily Nigerian newspaper, showing the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, allegedly collecting bribe amounting to $5m.
The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday commenced the public hearing of the publisher of the online newspaper, Ja’afar Ja’afar to give testimony about the allegation before the investigative committee set up by the house.
However, primary school pupils, were seen in the metropolis and close to the state house of assembly where the public hearing was held with placards expressing support for the governor against the online publisher.
The action generated a lot of reactions from Civil society Organisations and many parents that condemned the act.
In a statement signed by FIDA chairperson in Kano, Barrister Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim, expressed displeasure over the development.
The statement said FIDA was saddened by how the children were made to carry placards to show solidarity to the governor during the public hearing while in school uniform.
It noted that the issue was of great concern as the children were supposed to be in classrooms because the program was held on school day.
The group in the statement described the development as “blatant act of insensitivity on the pupils”, noting that, “the poor innocent children were not aware of the effect of their act and it portend danger in future. “
It said “this organization at this juncture ,wishes to draw the attention of all stakeholders, especially the Ministry of Education and Primary School Board to look into the matter and take appropriate measures on the schools that engaged the children into this act. ”
