FIDA Raises Alarm Over Increase Violence Against Women, Girls

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) on Monday raised an alarm over increasing cases of violence against women and girls in the country calling for a collective prompt approach to address the issue.

The alarm was raised by Kano state chapter FIDA chairperson Barrister Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim during the first International Day for the elimination of violence against women and girls organized by Arewa Youth for Peace and Unity Forum held at Africa House Kano state government house.

Represented at the occasion by Barrister Adama Usman, the FIDA chairperson stated that, it is sad to notice that statistically, the rate at which this violence occurred has been increasing which signifies that there is a need for something to be done urgently to eliminate the menace.

According to her, one of the measures that need to be taken is that of erasing the culture of silence by victims.

“The fear that if I speak out my parents will skin me alive or the society will no longer respect me as a person has to stop, and the only way to stop it is through educating the women and the girls on what needs to be done; when, where and whom to speak out to on such issues,” said the chairperson.

Similarly, in his goodwill message, Professor Ahmed Ilyasu of the faculty of education Bayero University Kano (BUK), stated that fear of God is the principal cardinal measure that each and every individual should imbibe in curtailing the menace; according to him there is no religion that preaches violence against women and girls, therefore, the fear of God and following religious injunctions is what will eliminate the menace of gender violence in our nation.
