Ganduje Seeks Approval To Borrow N15bn To Fund Free Education Policy

The Kano State House of Assembly on Monday read a letter from Governor Abdullahi Ganduje seeking approval for the 44 Local Government Areas of the state to access N15 billion loan.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Alhaji Abdulazeez Garba-Gafasa read the letter at the plenary session on Monday.

Governor Ganduje, in the letter, said the decision to access the loan was to enable the local governments to successfully conduct the state government’s free and compulsory education policy.

The letter stated that the 44 local government areas will receive N340 million each if approved.

The governor explained in the letter that the loan would be sought from one of the commercial banks.

He noted that it is aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the free and compulsory education program declared by the state.

According to the letter,  the loan is expected to be offset in 30 months with an interest of 15 per cent only.

Also, the loan will be deducted from the local governments’ monthly Federal allocations.

The Speaker later forwarded the letter to the House Committee on Local Governments with a two-day dateline for the committee to present its report before the assembly.
