Gov Yusuf lauds PCACC over anti corruption fight

The Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, reinstated his commitment to fight corruption in the state.

The governor stated this on Saturday in Kano during the commemoration of the 20th International Anti-Corruption Day, which was organized by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC).

The governor represented by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, said his administration was committed to fighting corruption such as the deduction of the workers’ salaries every month by the previous administration and revoking the sale of Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital, which was sold by the immediate past administration.

“As part of our commitment to fight corruption in Kano State, we stopped the deduction of the workers’ salaries. Before we came into office, no civil servant in Kano State could tell you his actual salary, because there was a deduction in it every month. This was not only done to the workers but also to the pensioners. You would see a pensioner, who was receiving seven thousand as his pension, but the immediate past regime deducted two thousand out of the seven thousand, and the worst part of it was that we did not know where the money went. When we came in, we stopped that.”

“And also, as part of our effort to fight corruption in Kano, we revoked the sale of Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital, which was sold to an unpatriotic citizen at the cost of six million. We revoked the sale and equipped the hospital with equipment to provide quality healthcare delivery for our people. The hospital offers treatment of general pediatrics, free admission, surgery, immunization, nutritional services, and research and training, but unfortunately, the facility was abandoned and the equipment was being stolen.”

In his remark, the Executive Chairman of the Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado said the aim of the event was to commemorate the International Day of Corruption and also to use the opportunity to create awareness on the danger of corrupt practices.

“Today is a day marked by the United Nations to commemorate the fight against corruption globally. We are here to create awareness on the danger of corrupt practices so that people will key in and buy into the fight against corruption. And at least, as you can see for yourselves, the fight against corruption in Kano State is on. We are the only sub-national anti-corruption agency that is up and doing, working side by side with all other anti-corruption agencies to fight corruption, both preventive and curative.”

“Today, we are full of activities. We are not only here to arrest, detain, and prosecute. No, we are making mechanisms that will help people not engage in corrupt practices.”

On his part, the Kano Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, emphasized the importance of reform and reorientation in key sectors to combat corruption effectively at both the state and national levels.

He said that the anti-graft institutions should undergo changes that would influence the values of the people working in them. He also called for the judiciary to take action against any judge who compromised the institutional values with his personal interest in his rulings.

In the event, the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission also launched an online public suggestion website, www.shawarata.ng.com, that will help people to submit their suggestions and opinions to the Kano State Government to improve the productivity and effectiveness of governance.
