2023 Summit: Kano ACReSAL Project Coordinator joins other experts at Africa climate summit in Nairobi

Kano Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape project (ACReSAL) Project Coordinator, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, has taken center stage at the Africa Climate Summit holding in Nairobi, Kenya, as one of the representatives from Nigeria.

The event, which brings together leaders, experts, and activists from across the continent, aims to address pressing climate challenges and promote sustainable solutions and is designed to last for five days from Monday 4th – Friday 8th.

The event organized by the Kenyan Government in conjunction with the African Union is running in parallel with Africa Climate Week theme, “Driving green growth and climate finance solutions for Africa and the world”.

Speaking to journalists on the sideline of the maiden edition of the Africa Climate Summit that kicked off today in Nairobi, Kenya, Kano Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape project (ACReSAL) Project Coordinator, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim said the project is in consultation with experts on the provision of solar cooking stoves to address deforestation and encourage clean energy.

Hasim said ACReSAL is penetrating into local communities to sensitize the people and create more awareness on the effects of climate change as it affects agricultural production, and poses a threat to their socio-economic aspect of development.

“Our work in Kano State demonstrates that with the right strategies and community engagement, we can build resilience in even the most challenging agricultural landscapes by touching the lives of the rural communities especially the women and vulnerable through the ACReSAL project, ‘’ Dr. Hasim said.

A statement issued by Kano ACReSAL communications officer, Maryam Abdulkadir and forwarded to SOLACEBASE, on Monday said Dr. Dahir Hashim while expressing the commitment of the Kano State Government under the leadership of the Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration in creating a green environment and encouraging clean energy in line with climate action.

“Our work in Kano State demonstrates that with the right strategies and community engagement, we can build resilience in even the most challenging agricultural landscapes by touching the lives of the rural communities especially the women and vulnerable through the ACReSAL project.”

According to the Summit organizers, their goal is to deliver climate-positive growth and finance solutions for Africa and the World and present a united front ahead of the COP28 summit in the United Arab Emirates on 30th November, 2023.

Thus, stakeholders are converging in Nairobi for the summit to brainstorm and press for increasing adaptation finance to Africa by more than double and ensure it is based on Africa’s needs and reaches the communities at the forefront of the crisis.

Part of what the summit seeks to address is Africa’s increasing exposure to climate change and its associated costs on the continent and to influence commitments, pledges, and outcomes including the Nairobi Declaration, a blueprint for Africa’s green energy transition.

According to the United Nations, Africa accounts for only 2 to 3 percent of the world’s carbon emissions. And yet the worst hit continent by global warming, based on the Science Direct Database findings of 4,000 people killed and 19 million affected by extreme weather events in Africa in 2022.
