Kano insists on tax collection from tricycle operators despite protests

Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) has insisted that there is no going back on the daily N100 tax payment by tricycle riders despite their protests.

It said the decision of the state government to collect tax from tricycle riders was in line with the agreement reach between the State government and tricycle owners associations.

Solacebase reports that tricycle operators had commenced protest since Wednesday on major roads in the metropolis with the intention to draw the attention of the state government and other authorities to the untold hardship they are going through with the daily tax payment of N100.

Speaking with solacebase on Friday, KAROTA Public Relations Officer, Nabulisi Abubakar Kofar Na’isa who expressed surprise over the protest by the tricycle operators said the decision on the daily tax payment was in agreement with the operators association and the agency.

‘’It is surprising that they are demonstrating as the daily tax decision was in agreement with their association. Therefore if they want to protest, they need to do that peacefully but not barricading the roads for other users, ‘’Nabulisi said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Kano Tricycle Owners Association, Alhaji Sani Dankoli told solacebase on Friday, that they are appealing to the state government to suspend the enforcement of the tax and the arrest of defaulters.

‘’We want the government to extend enforcement for at least two weeks for us to mobilize our members and create awareness for them to key into the government policy, ‘’said Dankoli.

He said Kano should consider the initial daily payment of N100 per day, instead of imposing six months upward payment on members.
