Kano is desirous to environmental development in line with global best practices-Official

Kano State government has formally handed over the government`s waste management operational plant and equipment to a private firm, Messrs Capegate Investment Limited Company.

Solacebase reports that while handing over the documents to the company, held at REMASAB, the State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso said the State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is desirous to revolutionize environmental management in the state in line with the best global practices.

This was contained in a statement issued by the ministry of environment public relations officer, Malam Sunusi Abdullahi Kofar Na’isa, on Friday and sent to Solacebase.

‘’Dr. Getso maintained that to achieve this noble objective, the government had entered into an agreement under a public-private partnership arrangement with a reputable firm, Messrs Capegate Investment Limited Company that has expertise in waste management,’’ the statement said.

‘’The commissioner further explained that the main purpose of the partnership with the company is to convert the huge amount of waste generated daily in the state into bio-gas to provide electricity to households, street lights, etc.’’

According to the statement, the waste will also be used to produce both organic and inorganic fertilizer so as to improve agricultural output in the state in addition to creating job opportunities to at least 4,300 youth in the state would be employed and revenue generation.

“Certainly, it will add value not only in making Kano cleaner or the environment safer but a lot of good things will be accrued from this partnership,” the statement said.

‘’In line with the concessional agreement entered between the state government and Messrs Capegate Investment Limited Company, the government would hand over all operational plants and equipment for waste management to the new investment agency for the proper take-off of the programme with the Ministry of Environment serving as the regulatory body and REMASAB as a supervisory agency. ‘’

Dr Getso stressed the need for the three agencies to work as a team for the benefit of the state especially in the area of solid waste management.

It added that “Only operational plants and equipment of waste management had been handed over. But the equipment are not given free-of-charge as it is part of the equity of the state government as stated categorically in the agreement and all the casual workers would be engaged by the company.’’

‘’The President and Chief Executive Officer of Messrs Capegate Investment Limited Company, Alhaji Bashir Namadina expressed delight over the agreement, assuring of the company’s resolve to use its vast experiences and technologies to make Kano a green city through collaboration.

‘’Alhaji Bashir promised that in the next 24 months Kano environment would change to become more sanitary, cleaner and habitable and thanked the State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, members of the State Executive Council and all stakeholders for the opportunity given to his company.’’
