”Kwankwaso’s son nomination as commissioner is nepotism ”- Kano lawyer laments

A social critic and Kano-based legal practitioner, Barr. Abba Hikima has expressed disapproval over Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso’s nomination as a commissioner.

SOLACEBASE had reported that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has forwarded 4 names as commissioner nominees to the state assembly for approval.

The names include NNPP Presidential Candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s son, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, Abduljabbar Umar Garko and Shehu Sule Aliyu Karaye.

Speaking to SOLACEBASE on Tuesday, Hikima, a human rights activist described the appointment as nepotism and a disgrace to the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf.

He argued that Mustapha is not the most qualified among all Kwankwasiyya supporters and that there are many others who contributed to the realization of the administration who are more competent than him.

“From a legal standpoint, the nomination is not problematic as long as the nominee meets all the requirements, which the state house of assembly is mandated to verify and ensure his qualifications for the appointment,” Hikima stated.

“However, looking at it from another perspective, one could argue that this should not have happened. During his electioneering campaign, Abba Kabir Yusuf criticized the administration of Abdullahi Ganduje for involving his family in his governance, and the NNPP challenged his actions. To our astonishment, they are now doing the same thing, indicating no difference between the previous administration and this one.”

“Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is not the most outstanding among all the individuals. One must question his qualifications, track record, and past achievements, and unfortunately, these questions remain unanswered.”

“When discussing support for the Kwankwasiyya movement, his name is not prominent because there are many more competent individuals than him. So, why him?”

“This appointment appears selfish and will likely result in nothing but embarrassment for the administration.”

“The appointment is an act of nepotism; there are many individuals who are far more competent than him. To appoint someone with no track record simply because he is the son of Kwankwaso is nepotism and poses a threat to our democracy.”

“In developed countries, they practice meritocracy, a merit-based employment system where individuals are selected and advanced into positions based on their demonstrated abilities. This system is preferable to me.”

However, Spokesman to Kano State Governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa told SOLACEBASE that there is absolutely nothing wrong with Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso’s nomination as a commissioner with that of the three others.

Sanusi said, ‘’They’re all eminently qualified to serve as cabinet members.’’
