The leadership of State-Level Accountability Mechanism (SLAM) a coalition of civil societies in Jigawa state has revealed that recent statistics have shown that an estimated 100 million malaria cases with over 300,000 deaths per year is recorded in Nigeria and therefore seeks increase domestic funding on malaria from governments at all levels to control the menace.
This was disclosed by Jigawa state SLAM Chairman Malam Mustafa Umar during a sensitization town hall meeting held in Dutse to advocate for more domestic resource investment in Malaria control organized by Support To National Malaria Programme 2 (SUNMAP2), a DFID funded intervention on malaria control.

According to him, it is sad to note that, there is inadequate budgetary allocations, high dependence on donor funds, and a high level of private expenditure by families on the prevention and treatment of malaria; situations he described as very detrimental to the fight against malaria in various states of the federation.
“Malaria remains an infamously famous household name owing to the fact that it is still responsible for mortality across the states. People innocently consider Malaria as a ‘normal’ ailment just like flu and body ache hence their lackluster attitude towards its prevention and treatment and sadly, malaria is neither perceived nor debated among the political leadership and citizenry as a priority health issue,” he said.
He added that, Nigeria still accounts for 25% of global malaria burden, a large proportion of which are children under the age of five and pregnant women adding that Intervention coverage are low for the most vulnerable groups and access is unbalanced in the nation.
One of the participants Malam Aminu Muhammad stated that, although the fight to control malaria is not a government affairs alone, there is a need for the government to as a matter of urgency increased its budgetary allocation to malaria just like they usually do for other health challenges especially polio.
