N950m money laundering: Appeal Court discharges Ibrahim Shekarau

The Court of Appeal, Kano Division, has discharged a former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau in a N950 million money laundering linked to him and two others.

Recall that Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau was arraigned alongside Aminu Bashir wali and Mansur Ahmad on May 24, 2018, for allegedly collecting the sum of N950 million from the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Deizani Alison Maduekwe to distribute to PDP members in Kano during the 2015 presidential election.

Solacebase reports that Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and the two others had entered a no-case submission before a Federal High court in Kano presided by Justice Lewis Allagoa in the matter filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

However, the federal high court ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has established a prima facie case of alleged money laundering against the former Governor and former minister of foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali and Mansur Ahmad informing the trio to open their defence.

Thus, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau was standing trial on three count charges of conspiring with Aminu Wali and received N25m from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Also on the second count of he, Ibrahim Shekarau of receiving N25m from the PDP and retention and taken possession of N950m from the PDP.

According to the charge, they ought to know that the money was proceed of an illegal act of the former  Minister of Petroleum Resources, Deizani Alison Maduekwe. All the charges are contrary to the money laundering act.

The former Kano State Governor, insisting on his no-case submission headed to the court of appeal challenging the ruling of the federal high court.

In its judgement on Tuesday, read by Justice Amina Audi Wambai of the Court of Appeal, Kano Division said the EFCC has failed to establish a prima facie case of alleged money laundering to the tune of N950 million against Malam Ibrahim Shekarau.

The appeal court then discharged and acquit the former governor as well as upturn the ruling of the federal high court.
