National Digital Identity Key To Sustainable Development – Ex Minister
Former Minister National Planning Dr Shamsuddeen Usman has revealed that the first and most critical element to peace, security, and development is that there is a need to deploy all energies and resources to know who Nigerians are by completing the national identity management program.
The former Minister made this known while presenting a paper titled ‘The significance of Security, Rule of Law and Ethics to Nigeria’s Sustainable Development’ during Yusuf Maitama Sule University’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd combined convocation lecture held at Hafiz Abubakar Auditorium of the university.

According to him, the current Nigerian digital identity is quite weak and uncoordinated with only about 38% of Nigerians having any form of identity adding that currently 13 federal and 3 or more state agencies are involved in ID services in Nigeria with significant overlapping and at a higher cost.
He further stresses that; such agencies can do better with adequate financial and other logistic backing from authorities concerned.
“If given the necessary commitment and resources, we can provide unique digital identification to every Nigerian in the last 3 years of Buhari administration. We have during our time recommended that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) should assume leadership and coordination role to ensure that Nigeria is able to provide digital identification to its citizens within the shortest possible time,” said the former minister.
The chairman of the occasion professor Attahiru Jega, former INEC chairman said he is honored to chair the occasion which is technically the first convocation lecture of the university.
“I consider it a great honour because the university was named after the demise of late Alhaji Maitama Sule (Dan masanin Kano), whose contribution to the development of the state was enormous. I didn’t realize that until this early years because their generation establishes relationships and those relationships are enduring relationships and they also journey to ensure that we the younger generation emulate that relationship, ” he said
