The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on Friday called for adequate funding and training of doctors in order to have the required technology for the need for Nigerians.
Speaking at the National Executive Council Meeting of the Nigerian Medical NMA, held in Kano State on Friday, Kano branch, NMA Chairman Dr Sanusi Bala noted that “this will ensure doctors’ job satisfaction and will block brain drain and ‘patient drain’ to medical tourism and consequential economic loss,”
He also stated that “we hope after today the message would be loud and clear; manpower, skills acquisition and modern technology are what the country needs for the specialized care and developed health system in our dear country.”

The chairman stated that the meeting is historical as it is the first time to be held in Kano.
He added that the association, as part of the events marking the NEC meeting, had offered free medical services to about 5000 residents in the state, adding that the association had rendered free three-step congenital Ectopia Vesicae surgery on a boy and took care of his medication.
On his part, the Minister of Health Osagie Ehanire revealed that the Federal Government has approved N55 billion for Basic Healthcare Provision. Dr. Ehanire, represented by, Permanent Secretary in the ministry Dr. Nasir Sani Gwarzo said the fund had been appropriated, approved and signed through the office of the Chairman House Committee on Health, Tanko Sanunu.
According to him, 50% of the fund would go for Primary Healthcare, infrastructural development and routine funding, 45% for Health insurance in the same PHC and 5% goes to Public Healthcare Emergency.
“The minister asked me to reaffirm to you, the government’s commitment to healthcare finances. In addition to all health finances, which has been based on appropriation that has been approved and signed through Mr. Sununu, there is an extra N55bn for the basic healthcare provision fund. It is not going to be a one-off, it is going to be a continuous event every year,” he said.
The Minister also expressed the federal government’s effort to tame medical tourism and making Nigeria a medical tourism destination through the provision of infrastructures and necessary provisions to achieve the desired goal.
In a remark, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of the state said his administration is up and doing to ensure inclusive healthcare services in the stat.
He noted that health finances is a major challenge in Nigeria as the most populous nation in Africa, and Kano with the highest population in Nigeria, adding that despite the challenges, his government is committed to providing even healthcare services to the people.
Dr. Ganduje also stated that his administration’s health insurance scheme is among the best in Nigeria, adding that he will not rest on his ores until he provides standard health services to the citizenry.
