SOLACEBASE reporter nominated for 2023 Sigma Award in United States
The Sigma Award in the United States of America has nominated SOLACEBASE reporter, Elijah Akoji, for the 2023 prestigious award.
SOLACEBASE reports that the annual award, which has four categories, is regarded as one of journalism’s recognition awards for uncovering crime at the grassroots, which cut across issues of human rights abuse and procurement abnormalities through groundbreaking stories.
Elijah the second Nigerian that made the list was nominated in the grassroots investigative journalism category of the award for his work that showed evidence of how cholera thrives in Jigawa state despite multi-billion-naira health investment by the government.

The report drew from extensive analysis and condition of health facilities in Jigawa state, the distance residents travel to access quality health care, the death cases often recorded as a result of the lack of qualified health workers, and the absence of accountability in the health sector in the state.

The finalist was announced on Friday as one of the 15 best entries shortlisted from over 500 entries received across 52 countries.
The organizers said the shortlisted projects include 15 collaborative works and that six are donor-funded reports.
