Spinal Cord Injury Day: Association Advocates Policies To Make Life Meaningful To Patients

0

The Nigerian Spine Society (NSS) has called on relevant authorities to come up with policies that would make life meaningful to spinal cord injury patients.

This is contained in a statement issued by the President of the association, Dr. Kabir Abubakar, in Kano on Thursday.

He said the life of spinal cord injury patients could only be meaningful if the requisite care was made available to them.

“Immediate and subsequent care should be covered by insurance schemes while facilities that can provide the needed care should be supported with soft loans to procure equipment and manpower.

“This should set the stage for considering employment opportunities and recreational activities including competitive sport to support spinal cord injury patients in living life to the fullest,’’ he said.

Abubakar, who was the former Medical Director of National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Kano, said NSS was prepared to partner with relevant government and private organizations to improve the living standard of spinal cord injury patients in the country.

“The Nigerian Spine Society wishes to identify with the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) in marking the 2019 Spinal Cord Injury Day.

“Since its inception on Sept. 5, 2016, the Spinal Cord Injury Day has been making an increasing success around the world under different slogans: ‘Yes we can’ in 2017 and ‘Stop Spinal Cord Injury’ in 2018.

“This year the focus will be on recreational activities with the slogan Living life to the fullest,’’ he added. (NAN)
