Two Graduates Drown In Niger State

Two graduates of the Niger State College of Education, Minna, on Sunday drowned while returning from their flooded rice farms at Bina in Lapai Local Government Area of the state.

The incident happened when the boat conveying Suleiman Ibrahim, 25 and Tanko Abako Hassan, 23, from Bina village capsized on Zumgbo-Edi River.

The incident brought to 17, the number of lives lost to flood-related accidents across the state since this year’s rainy season, with Lapai Local Government Area alone recording five.

Natives said the deceased went to assess the level of damage to their farms submerged following a heavy downpour and were returning when the accident happened.

As of the time of filing this report, local divers were still searching for their bodies.

When Daily Trust contacted, the spokesman of the state Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim AuduHussaini, said the agency was yet to get official briefing from its desk officer in the affected local government.

Our correspondent reports that about 42 communities were affected by flood in Lapai Local Government area with some of them still inaccessible as of Friday, according to the agency’s officials.

Lapai is one of the local government areas designated “red” by the agency.
