UNIDO Calls For Quick Passage Of National Quality Policy In Nigeria

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has challenged the Federal Executive Council for quick passage of the National Quality Policy in Nigerian that will enhance the country’s production, trade and business environment.

It said the draft policy awaiting formal promulgation is part of the National Quality Infrastructure project a four-year trade facilitation initiative that aims to build an inclusive and sustainable quality culture in Nigeria.

UNIDO Chief Technical Advisor,Dr. Shaukat Hussain stated this at a 3 day media capacity building for sustainability of the National Quality Infrastructure Project holding in Lagos

Dr. Shaukat Hussain said the policy that has several components will enhance quality of goods and service in Nigeria which will translate to accepting most exports goods from the country to many across the world.

“You see the National Quality InfrastructureProject for Nigeria ( NQIP) will support the development of missing standards and quality control bodies in Nigeria, with the overall objective of improving the competitiveness of Nigerian goods and services on the domestic , regional and global markets.”

“ The NQIP has 5 components that include National Quality Policy and Technical Regulations, Nigeria National Accreditation Service, National Metrology Institute, Strengthening the Organised Private Sector and Strengthening Consumer Protection”UNIDO C

The UNIDO Chief Technical Advisor noted that when the project commenced in 2014 , Nigeria’s Certification Index was less than 1%  and presently stands at above 5% with the structure put in place in terms of farmers training on improve food quality to enhance the food value chain from farm up to consumption with media campaign.UNIDO A

In a remark President Nigeria Guild of Editors while appreciating the capacity building for media professional to improve their reportage calls for support to the media to conduct investigative reports that will expose ills in the society.

On her part,UNIDO Media Consultant, Moji Makanjuola appealed to participants to use the knowledge that would be acquired at the training to educate Nigerians on the need to improve the quality of goods and services in the country as Nigeria so as to encourage healthy living and investment opportunities
