VIDEO: Tension as Unilorin student drown

A 100 level student of University of Ilorin (Unilorin) , Ojo Ezra Oluwatobi is dead. Oluwatobi , a student of the Faculty of Agriculture, got drown on Friday at a  river by the school farm while conducting practical work.

Eyewitnesses told Solacebase that the deceased slipped into the river while working on the farm and all efforts to rescue him was abortive as he was not brought of the river for more than one hour.

The emotionally wreck student said, ‘’ honestly, this is not the first time we are experiencing this kind of situation. The boy was working on the farm when he slipped into the river as there are no protection or barriers around the river to prevent such a situation.’’

‘’We tried all we could to rescue the boy but we could not bring him out alive until after one hour.’’

‘’There are cases where students are bitten by snakes on this farms as we have to work here for our practical but the school authorities have done nothing to save the situation.’’

”You see due to the dry season farming we are embarking on and the school lacks irrigation facilities, we mostly fetch water from the river to water our plants. So it was in the course of fetching water that the boy slipped into the river.”

The deceased was buried on Saturday at a cemetery in Ilorin and even the Head of Department attended the burial.

Our source said the faculty condolence visitation is scheduled for 3.30pm today, Sunday.

‘’The faculty has also directed us to assemble at the farm centre, tomorrow Monday so that they would address us on the issue. This is due to the tension brewing up among the students as the university is trying to cover up the incident,’’ our source said.

‘’The university authority has mostly been threatening students with expulsion if such information on this type of incident is released to the public. More than 1,000 students were unduly expelled last year by the university authority.’’

”Some of our colleagues are already mobilizing to demonstrate over the incident as the university is nonchalant about the it.”

Solacebase contacted the university Director of Information, Mr. Kunle Akogun on Saturday, who claimed not to be aware of the situation and promised to get back to the reporter.

However, he never did and when this reporter called him severally on Sunday, the calls were not picked neither did he call back.
