Kano State Government has said that windstorm damaged about 3,000 schools in the state.
The government said the schools affected in the destruction include primary, junior and senior secondary across the 44 local government areas of the state.
The State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB Chairman, Dr Danlami Hayyo stated this in an exclusive with Solacebase on Monday.
Dr Danlami Hayyo who is also the chairman of a committee established by the state government to assess and estimate the level of damage to schools by windstorm said since early June when the raining season started, with the heavy downpour experienced in the state, the destruction to schools infrastructure was colossal.

He said with the reports the committee is preparing, so far, the renovation and repairs of the schools affected would cost the state over N30bn through the use of direct labour so as to minimize the expenses.
Solacebase reports that some of the destroyed items include roofing of some schools, fencing, classroom walls, toilets and others
He explained that the use of direct labour to carry out the repairs and renovation entails Community participation, the involvement of the ministry of education and SUBEB technicians.
‘’ From the initial stage of our report so far, we discovered that the government would need N30bn to renovate and repair most of the destroyed infrastructures in the 3,000 schools affected by the windstorm if the government decided to embark on direct labour and not contracting it out,’’ said Dr Danlami Hayyo.
The SUBEB Chairman noted that the repairs would be in phases as the government does not have such fund available to address the repairs and renovation.
‘’ We are going to categorize the repairs in three phases such as the highly damaged schools, those with less damage and those with minimal destruction.’’
He added that the full report, findings and recommendation of the committee is expected to be submitted to the governor in the next two week.
